Disability Development Services
Pursat (DDSP) is a recently formed national
organisation primarily working in community-based rehabilitation
in the rural areas.
They work in three remote target areas and employ the principles of participation,
empowerment and long-term sustainability. Their goals and objectives are very
much influenced by these factors ; they use office space allocated by the Ministry
of Social Affairs, they do not have any vehicles, utilise the resources of
other NGOs wherever possible, have a ministry person seconded to their organisation,
and so on.
Again in terms of options for community-based activities it is one that could
be followed to ascertain the impact this model is likely to have over a period
of time. To date the organisation provides basic needs (food, soap etc), rehabilitation
(physiotherapy and appliances), social needs, and economic needs. Awareness-raising
is a high priority for the community as well a being the precursor to the formation
of groups of people with disabilities.
